Auburn, AL, United States (4E Sports) – Auburn is in grief following the death of freshman tight end Jakell Mitchell, who was shot and killed Sunday morning at an apartment complex near the campus.

According to AL.com, Mitchell suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the shooting and died at East Alabama Medical Center. Police said the death was being investigated as a homicide.

The university will provide counseling services for those grieving the death of Mitchell, a redshirt for the 2014 season and was expected to compete next year for a starting spot as a tight end or H-back.

“I’m devastated and saddened by the passing of Jakell Mitchell,” said Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn . “My thoughts and prayers are with Jakell’s family and friends, who are suffering through this senseless tragedy.”

“I know the Auburn family is hurting, especially our players and coaches, and we are going to love and support them through this difficult time. We have lost a member of our family too young, too soon,” he added.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jakell Mitchell’s family and those who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy,” athletics director Jay Jacobs said in a statement.

“This is a very trying time for those close to Jakell , including the student-athletes, coaches, staff and Auburn Family. We will provide counseling and support and do everything we can to help them through the grieving process,” he added.

Several members of the team expressed their grief on Twitter.

“Never without a smile, loyalty to those he loved, courage, compassion and an angel in heaven,” freshman quarterback Sean… MORE
