After the U.S Supreme Court Arguments Fresno gay marriage advocates rally at a federal courthouse.

When they married in 1995 Cheryl and Sandy Waymack went all out for the ceremony before friends and family. They walked down the aisle in a dress and suit, serving wedding cake and then going off on a honeymoon.

But then the couple from Visalia realised that their marriage was not accepted under the law since they were lesbians. They became two single women moving in together, then two single people buying a house together, and a “single woman” who put her friend on an insurance policy.

On Tuesday the Waymacks and other local advocates gathered in downtown Fresno in front of the Robert E Coyle federal courthouse to express their support for equality for marriages after the Supreme Court examined arguments about same-sex marriages.

The group comprised of 25 people and they waved rainbow flags and held signs and boards with phrases like “Legalized Love”.

The crowds also cheered the cars that honked and drove by.

Marriage limitations in Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and Michigan were argued over in Tuesday’s 2 and a half hour oral argument

Marriage has been restricted by each of the states in a variety of ways. For instance in 2004 a state constitutional amendment that declares only marriage between “one man and one woman” was ratified by 74.5% of voters in Kentucky.

The United States values marriage according to Sandy Waymack but she adds that couples, even those living in states with marriage equality face discrimination since because same sex marriages are banned in 13 states. For e.g, she said, if she and her wife are on a vacation in one of those states the other will not get visitation rights in hospital in case the other is hurt.
